Solutions for the seafood industry

Fish and other seafood items are precious food products: as they are rich in vitamins, minerals and trace elements, they form an important contribution to a healthy diet. However, the catching of edible fish is threatened by overfishing – a further reason to deal with this valuable nutrition ever more carefully. That is why leading companies in the food and packaging industry, such as SEALPAC, engage themselves in the SAVE FOOD initiative with the primary goal to prevent food losses around the globe.

Being a popular food item in today’s kitchen, but also extremely sensitive and perishable, seafood must be treated with extreme care. Modern MAP and vacuum packaging, as well as a strictly controlled, uninterrupted cold chain, must ensure highest product safety and optimal shelf life. It protects the food against the ingress of oxygen, which accelerates degradation, thus avoiding any undesirable smells and taste. As such, salmon, shrimp and alike are optimally preserved, preventing them from drying out, maintaining their aroma, and ensuring that their specific flavour is not transmitted to other foods. Let SEALPAC show you how.

Overview of SEALPAC solutions for the seafood industry.

FAQ zu Fisch & Meeresfrüchte

  • Can the packaging reliably achieve the required shelf life and freshness for seafood products?

Regardless whether using modified atmosphere or vacuum skin packaging, owing to their consistent sealing process, which protects seafood against the ingress of oxygen, hence avoiding undesirable smells and taste, SEALPAC traysealers and thermoformers always guarantee maximum shelf life. Naturally, this also depends on the packaging materials used and the production environment (e.g. hygiene and temperature). In today’s world, the main challenge is reducing plastics whilst maintaining the shelf life of the sensitive and perishable seafood. For each product, we support our customers by reducing the thickness of plastic used in their current packaging, as well as by introducing hybrid solutions, where most of the plastic is replaced by cardboard. In case of hybrid solutions, we enable the consumer to separate the individual materials after use. By throwing these materials away in the appropriate waste bins, recycling is made easy. In case of 100% plastic packaging, we have optimized our traysealers to handle so-called ultra-light trays. Since 2014 already, we offer our EasyLid® system for reclosable packaging, due to which the common snap-on lid can be eliminated. This leads to weight reductions of up to 40%. On our SEALPAC thermoformers, we offer the unique SmartShape forming system that achieves an improved consistency, particularly in the corners of the pack, without requiring an additional stamp mechanism. As a result, up to 10% thinner films can be used. All this, without compromising on shelf life.

  • How well does the machine handle wet, delicate, or irregular seafood products without seal contamination?

SEALPAC traysealers and thermoformers are known for their high seal integrity. By combining first-class lifting systems with innovative sealing technology, your seafood packs will always be hermetically closed. Even in wet environments or when using marinated products. Furthermore, we are capable of combining a hermetic seal with easy opening for the consumer. And in today’s world, where plastic needs to be reduced to the minimum, and the recyclability of that plastic need to be maximized, we offer various packaging solutions that still make your products stand out on the retail shelves.

  • What packaging technologies are supported (MAP, vacuum skin, leakproof packs, freezer-ready formats, etc.)?

Since the foundation of our company, SEALPAC machines have been designed to run all of today’s and tomorrow’s packaging concepts on the same base machine. This includes classic modified atmosphere packaging, vacuum skin packaging, and shrink packaging, but also more complicated packaging concepts such as FlatSkin®, FibreStyle, or separate InsideCut. As packaging experts, we would gladly sit down with you to design the optimal pack for your fresh seafood.

  • Can the system effectively control odor, purge leakage, and oxygen exposure?

Next to offering highest seal integrity, SEALPAC also develops specific packaging concept for its seafood customers. As an example, both on our traysealers and thermoformers, we supply our Gamba Packaging system for unprocessed shrimp. Body parts that lie over the sealing edge are cut off while being sealed. Therefore, the hollow organs of the shrimp pose no risk to the safety of the pack as a reliable seal is ensured. Another example is the use of permeable skin film to allow for immaculate vacuum skin packaging of fresh fish, which preserves the product throughout its entire shelf life.

  • How attractive and premium is the final package presentation on retail shelves?

With a perfect recognition of market-defining trends, SEALPAC quickly converts these into innovative products, systems, solutions, and services. We work closely together with leading manufacturers of packaging materials to develop consumer-driven total solutions, which will improve your production’s efficiency and profitability. We work jointly with you towards the optimal solution for your individual application, so that every single one of your seafood products will impress your customers, and that your long-term success at retail is secured.

  • What output can realistically be achieved in high-volume seafood production?

The output always depends on a number of factors, such as product, format, packaging concept, and production environment. A packaging line can only go as fast as its slowest component, but this will not be the SEALPAC packaging machine. As an example, our A10max traysealer in double-lane execution could package 200 trays per minute under MAP (based on a 190 x 144 mm tray). However, line efficiency is also important. Every unplanned interruption, inefficient movement, or disruption in the process directly impacts production costs. Against this backdrop, our packaging machines are consistently designed for stable, reproducible processes. We rely on robust construction, intelligent monitoring systems, and automated assistance functions that ensure flawless operation again and again. As such, we achieve the highest OEE in the market, sometimes up to 99.5%.

  • Can the machine reliably run recyclable, mono-material, or sustainable packaging materials?

Each machine supports a wide range of packaging solutions, from classic MAP applications to today’s sustainable material concepts. Innovative packaging features can also be integrated, such as the unique EasyPeelPoint system, which enables particularly user-friendly opening of the pack by the consumer. The combination of high precision and intelligent control ensures that the machine reliably handles even the most demanding materials and geometries. Both our traysealers and thermoformers are capable of handling any modern, recyclable, ultra-light, or mono-materials without headaches.

  • How hygienic is the machine design and how easy is it to clean in corrosive, high-moisture environments?

Due to their sophisticated design with optimal accessibility, SEALPAC traysealers and thermoformers stand for enhanced protection of both product and personnel. Whether it concerns the stainless-steel body that can be hosed down, the integrated slopes that optimize water drainage, or the avoidance of interfering contours: our machines allow for fast, simple and reliable cleaning.

  • How well does the machine integrate with weighing, labeling, inspection, and automation systems?

SEALPAC equipment is known for its flawless integration into new and existing production lines. As such, the machines enable you to set up fully automated solutions for the processing and packaging of your products. Any synchronization, be it with filleters, slicers, multi-head weighers, coding equipment, labellers, metal detection, or even end-of-line equipment for secondary packaging, is made easy. Furthermore, SEALPAC machines are fully prepared for Industry 4.0, meaning that they can be easily integrated into digitalized production environments via standardized interfaces (e.g. OPC/UA). This allows for maximum control and traceability.

  • What are the total operating costs, including film, gas, energy, maintenance, and downtime?

When evaluating a packaging line, simply looking at the investment costs is no longer sufficient. What matters is how efficient the line is in daily operation and what the actual cost per package is. Energy consumption, material usage, changeover times, uptime, and process stability, even when using more challenging mono-materials, are directly interconnected. The total cost of ownership can only be determined by knowing your exact production details. In general, we know that the investment costs of a SEALPAC machine are less than 3% of the total line costs, that we have 90% less air consumption by using servo technology, that we can run up to 10% thinner films on our thermoformers due to the SmartShape forming technology, that we can place 33% more trays in a tool by running Long Side Leading, and that we have up to 30% less film consumption with InsideCut whilst achieving an excellent product appearance. Furthermore, our machines are built to last: over 95% of every traysealer or thermoformer ever built is still in operation!
