Confectionery and nuts industry

Solutions for the confectionery & nuts industry

Today’s packaging has to meet a multitude of requirements. In addition to maximum food safety and optimal protection for their product, manufacturers of high-quality confectionery and nuts expect the utmost efficiency in the production process. Their packs should offer protection against moisture, extend the shelf life of heat-sensitive products like chocolates and truffles, as well as slow down the oxidation process of fats in nuts.

Retailers expect longest possible shelf life, an attractive appearance that arouses purchase incentives, and best logistical properties. Among the wishes of consumers are top ingredients and easy opening. Striking pack formats should make them want to buy the sweet or savoury snacks, whilst original designs will draw attention to trendy products such as superfoods. Last but not least, sustainability has become a decisive factor in the buying behaviour of consumers. Improved environmental protection and reduction of plastic waste has led to a packaging industry aimed at increased recycling rates and the development of alternative packaging solutions.

Overview of SEALPAC solutions for the confectionery & nuts industry.

FAQ ~に関す お菓子&ナッツ

  • Can the packaging effectively protect chocolates and nuts from moisture, oxygen, and oxidation?

Regardless whether using modified atmosphere or vacuum skin packaging, owing to their consistent sealing process, which protects confectionery and nuts against the ingress of oxygen, hence avoiding undesirable smells and taste, SEALPAC traysealers and thermoformers always guarantee maximum shelf life. Naturally, this also depends on the packaging materials used and the production environment (e.g. hygiene and temperature). In today’s world, the main challenge is reducing plastics whilst maintaining the shelf life of sensitive and perishable food items. For each product, we support our customers by reducing the thickness of plastic used in their current packaging, as well as by introducing hybrid solutions, where most of the plastic is replaced by cardboard. In case of hybrid solutions, we enable the consumer to separate the individual materials after use. By throwing these materials away in the appropriate waste bins, recycling is made easy. In case of 100% plastic packaging, we have optimized our traysealers to handle so-called ultra-light trays. Since 2014 already, we offer our EasyLid® system for reclosable packaging, due to which the common snap-on lid can be eliminated. This leads to weight reductions of up to 40%. On our SEALPAC thermoformers, we offer the unique SmartShape forming system that achieves an improved consistency, particularly in the corners of the pack, without requiring an additional stamp mechanism. As a result, up to 10% thinner films can be used. All this, without compromising on shelf life.

  • How well does the machine preserve product appearance and prevent breakage or deformation?

SEALPAC equipment is designed to handle delicate products. This is reflected in our tray handling and sealing process. For example, on our traysealers, we use water-cooled sealing plates that prevent chocolates from melting or decolorizing. We also apply our unique MAP+ vacuum and gas system, which requires a less deep vacuum compared to other suppliers. This guarantees reduced product exposure, shorter cycle times, consistent gas values and reduced gas consumption when packing your nuts.

  • What packaging formats are supported (premium trays, MAP, resealable packs, portion packs, gifting formats, etc.)?

Since the foundation of our company, SEALPAC machines have been designed to run all of today’s and tomorrow’s packaging concepts on the same base machine. This includes classic modified atmosphere packaging, vacuum skin packaging, and shrink packaging, but also more complicated packaging concepts such as separate InsideCut. As packaging experts, we would gladly sit down with you to design the optimal pack for your confectionery or nuts.

  • Can the machine reliably run recyclable, mono-material, or paper-based packaging materials?

Each machine supports a wide range of packaging solutions, from classic MAP applications to today’s sustainable material concepts. Innovative packaging features can also be integrated, such as the unique EasyPeelPoint system, which enables particularly user-friendly opening of the pack by the consumer. The combination of high precision and intelligent control ensures that the machine reliably handles even the most demanding materials and geometries. Both our traysealers and thermoformers are capable of handling any modern, recyclable, ultra-light, or mono-materials without headaches.

  • How flexible is the machine for seasonal products and frequent packaging design changes?

All SEALPAC machines are equipped with innovative quick tooling exchange systems that make switching between different applications easy and avoid unnecessary machine downtime. On our thermoformers, for example, the sealing top tool can be replaced with minimum effort using a special trolley. This makes the exchange not only much quicker, but also safer for your employees, who no longer have to lift or carry heavy components. Other quick exchange systems include the side exchange or swivel table for bottom tools. On our traysealers, we offer the possibility for a tooling exchange from both sides of the machine using a unique SEALPAC trolley with integrated power connections. As such, a format change can take place within minutes.

  • What output can realistically be achieved during peak production periods?

The output always depends on a number of factors, such as product, format, packaging concept, and production environment. A packaging line can only go as fast as its slowest component, but this will not be the SEALPAC packaging machine. As an example, our A10max traysealer in double-lane execution could package 200 trays per minute under MAP (based on a 190 x 144 mm tray). However, line efficiency is also important. Every unplanned interruption, inefficient movement, or disruption in the process directly impacts production costs. Against this backdrop, our packaging machines are consistently designed for stable, reproducible processes. We rely on robust construction, intelligent monitoring systems, and automated assistance functions that ensure flawless operation again and again. As such, we achieve the highest OEE in the market, sometimes up to 99.5%.

  • How attractive and premium is the final package presentation on retail shelves?

With a perfect recognition of market-defining trends, SEALPAC quickly converts these into innovative products, systems, solutions, and services. We work closely together with leading manufacturers of packaging materials to develop consumer-driven total solutions, which will improve your production’s efficiency and profitability. We work jointly with you towards the optimal solution for your individual application, so that your confectionery products or nuts will impress your customers, and that your long-term success at retail is secured.

  • How easy is the machine to clean and manage allergen control requirements?

Due to their sophisticated design with optimal accessibility, SEALPAC traysealers and thermoformers stand for enhanced protection of both product and personnel. Whether it concerns the stainless-steel body that can be hosed down, the integrated slopes that optimize water drainage, or the avoidance of interfering contours: our machines allow for fast, simple and reliable cleaning.

  • What are the total operating costs, including film usage, maintenance, energy, and downtime?

When evaluating a packaging line, simply looking at the investment costs is no longer sufficient. What matters is how efficient the line is in daily operation and what the actual cost per package is. Energy consumption, material usage, changeover times, uptime, and process stability, even when using more challenging mono-materials, are directly interconnected. The total cost of ownership can only be determined by knowing your exact production details. In general, we know that the investment costs of a SEALPAC machine are less than 3% of the total line costs, that we have 90% less air consumption by using servo technology, that we can run up to 10% thinner films on our thermoformers due to the SmartShape forming technology, that we can place 33% more trays in a tool by running Long Side Leading, and that we have up to 30% less film consumption with InsideCut whilst achieving an excellent product appearance. Furthermore, our machines are built to last: over 95% of every traysealer or thermoformer ever built is still in operation!
